NEWSWEEK FEATURES ARTICLE ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF STEREOTYPES

The December 2, 1996, issue of Newsweek magazine featured a moving and inspiring piece by Magdoline Asfahani on page 18 entitled "Time to Look and Listen," which highlighted the effects of anti-Arab stereotypes. Ms. Asfahani articulated the fears and hurt of the Arab-American community beautifully.

She translated the anxieties of thousands of Arab Americans who are faced with the constant struggle of having to defend their heritage amid a barrage of negative media images. In doing so, she pointed out how

Arab-American children grow up trying to dissimulate their ethnic and/or

religious identity when in fact they have so much to share with their peers about their cultural background.
